Hayakawa Station opened on 21 December 1922 with the Atami Line's extension from Odawara to Manazuru in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture. The station building was destroyed in the 1 September 1923 Great Kantō Earthquake. The stop was absorbed into the Tōkaidō Main Line on 1 December 1934 after the Tanna Tunnel completed the trunk route. Scheduled freight ended on 1 December 1959 and parcel handling on 15 March 1972. The 1 April 1987 JNR privatisation transferred operations to JR East. Suica IC card service began on 18 November 2001, and the Midori-no-madoguchi staffed counter closed in 2007. The single curved island platform serves up to fifteen-car trains via a door-cut system, and the stop carries JR East number JT17.

Owing to its proximity to Odawara fishing port, the station has been promoted by Odawara city tourism material as "the JR station closest to a harbour in Japan."
