History
Gunchū Station opened on 4 July 1896 as the terminus of the South Iyo Railway. It became an Iyo Railway station on 1 May 1900 when South Iyo merged into Iyotetsu, and ceased to be a terminus on 10 May 1939 when the extension to Gunchū-kō (Gunchū Port) opened. The station consists of a single side platform serving one track and remains staffed.
Notes
The site immediately around Gunchū Station was historically the seat of district and town government, but those offices have since relocated and their land has been repurposed as parking; the western shopping streets that once oriented around the offices still survive in front of the station.
