Futatsuka Station first opened on 3 April 1899 on the Chūetsu Railway's Takaoka–Toide section but closed in May 1902. It reopened as a simple stopping point on 20 February 1914 in Takaoka, Toyama, and was promoted back to full station status in 1920 with the Chūetsu Railway's nationalisation. From 1957 a private siding served the Tonami Paper (later Chūetsu Pulp and Paper) factory adjacent to the station, mainly shipping newsprint. With JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR West. Siding freight ended on 30 September 2015 and the JR Freight operation was abolished on 1 April 2017; the station became unstaffed and retains its original wooden building.

Futatsuka's private siding to the Chūetsu Pulp and Paper factory shipped newsprint until 30 September 2015; the final train was a ten-car run that left the factory just after 9:30 that morning.
