Fuchū-Hommachi Station opened on 11 December 1928 with the Nambu Railway's Ōmaru–Yashikibun extension. It passed to the Ministry of Transport on 1 April 1944 when the Nambu Railway was nationalised, and freight handling ceased on 1 August 1962. On 1 April 1973 the Musashino Line opened between Fuchū-Hommachi and Shin-Matsudo, with the station taking over the function of the former Tōkyō-Keibajō-mae terminus when the Chūō Main Line's Shimokawara branch was abolished the same day. Parcel handling ended on 14 March 1985, and the station passed to JR East on 1 April 1987. Suica acceptance began on 18 November 2001, and smart platform doors entered service on the Nambu Line side on 17 February 2023.

A large temporary ticket gate sits on the south side of the concourse for Tokyo Racecourse events; it normally opens only on race days, but is also activated for major fireworks displays and other large events at the racecourse.
