Esaka Station opened on 24 February 1970 as a stop on the Osaka Municipal Subway Midōsuji Line. From the start it has also been the northern interchange with the privately operated Kita-Osaka Kyūkō Railway Namboku Line, with through-running trains continuing onto that company's track. The station is numbered M11 and is the northernmost station in the Osaka Metro subway system; despite that distinction it actually lies within Suita City rather than Osaka City. The station has an elevated single island platform serving two tracks, with a ticket concourse on the second floor and platform on the third.

Although the northernmost station of the Osaka Metro subway network, Esaka actually lies inside neighbouring Suita City rather than Osaka City itself.
