Chikugo-Kusano Station opened on 24 December 1928 as one of the original intermediate stations on the first stretch of the Kyudai Main Line, a Japanese Government Railways project that initially connected Kurume with Chikugo-Yoshii. It serves the city of Kurume in Fukuoka Prefecture, 15.7 km from the Kurume terminus. With the dissolution of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Kyushu, which still operates it. The modern, unstaffed station building is co-located with a local tourism organisation, the platforms remain at grade, and only local trains call here.

The station building shares its premises with the local tourism office, putting the Kurume City Kusano History Museum — a Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property in the former Kusano Bank Head Office — within easy walking distance.
