History

Ayukai Station, on the Yamagata Railway Flower Nagai Line in Shirataka, Yamagata, opened on 1922-12-11 when the Nagai Line was extended from Nagai to Ayukai. The station became a contracted-management station on 1965-04-01 and was simplified to unstaffed operation on 1984-03-19. It passed to JR East with the 1987 privatization of Japanese National Railways before being transferred to the third-sector Yamagata Railway on 1988-10-25, with the simplified contracted management formally ended on 1991-10-01. The single side platform serves traffic in both directions on the line that runs 27.9 rail kilometres from the southern terminus at Akayu.
