Aterazawa Station opened on 24 April 1922 as the terminus of what is now called the Aterazawa Line, 24.3 km from the line's start at Kita-Yamagata. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station came under JR East. A new station building was completed in 2002, housing a town-run shop selling sweets, sundries, and local produce. The Midori-no-Madoguchi staffed ticket office closed on 30 November 2021. The station has a single side platform and several accessibility features including a mobility-scooter-accessible route and a wheelchair-accessible bathroom. The town of Ōe maintains its town hall in the immediate surroundings.
