Arisugawa Station opened on 25 March 1910 as Sagano Station on the Arashiyama Densha Kidō, the name reflecting its location in Sagano village in then Kadono-gun. On 2 April 1918 it passed to Kyoto Dentō's Arashiyama Electric Railway through a company merger, and on 2 March 1942 to Keifuku Electric Railroad. Because tourists frequently confused the stop with the wider "Sagano" sightseeing district around Arashiyama, the station was renamed Arisugawa on 9 August 1975 — after the small river that flows between this stop and the next one, Kurumazaki-Jinja.

The station's platforms are staggered across a level crossing, with the Shijō-Ōmiya-bound platform on the west and the Arashiyama-bound platform on the east. The narrow lane running through the crossing connects to Sanjō-dōri about 50 metres away, but parts are too tight for cars to pass each other.
