Aira Station opened on 13 March 1988, built by JR Kyushu between the existing Shigetomi and Chōsa stations at the request of the local Aira town council. The town first formally petitioned the Kagoshima Railway Management Bureau in 1986 and contributed 24.67 million of the 51.965 million yen total construction cost. Construction began on 30 January 1988 and a stationmaster was assigned on 1 December 1989 when it became a full passenger station. SUGOCA service started on 1 December 2012, the ticket window closed on 12 March 2022, and direct JR Kyushu operation resumed on 1 October 2023. Despite carrying the city's name, the station serves a peripheral residential area rather than the municipal centre, which is anchored by neighbouring Chōsa Station.
