Aioi (Gifu)

Aioi Station opened on 10 July 1890 as Naba Station when the Sanyō Railway extended from Tatsuno to Une. It was nationalised on 1 December 1906 and assigned to the Sanyō Main Line on 12 October 1909. Following Aioi's incorporation as a city, the depot was renamed Aioi on 1 October 1942. The Akō Line opened from here to Banshū-Akō on 12 December 1951, with through running to Himeji from 26 December. The Sanyō Shinkansen reached Aioi when the Shin-Ōsaka–Okayama segment opened on 15 March 1972; the station was elevated and freight handling ceased the same day. JR West took over at the 1 April 1987 privatisation, and ICOCA acceptance began in November 2003.

When Japanese railway stations are listed in syllabic order, Aioi (Hyōgo) appears at the very top alongside the namesake stop in Gifu and the homophone-spelled Aiōi in Gunma.
